Von November bis Januar zeigt die Tiefgarage die Malerei der zwei niederländischen Künstler Marije Vermeulen und Guido Nieuwendijk. Sie werden die Wände im Vorderraum für die Präsentation einer ortsspezifischen Intervention nutzen. Nach einem gemeinsamen Besuch der Räumlichkeiten am Ebertplatz beschlossen sie, die Kontraste des Lichts und Dunkel in der Tiefgarage besonders auszuarbeiten.
Obwohl die Arbeitsweisen beider Künstler auf den ersten Blick große Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen, entspringen ihre Werke sehr unterschiedlichen Herangehensweisen. Auch die Ergebnisse bezeugen den jeweils individuellen Umgang mit dem Medium. Das Verbindende in der Arbeitsweise beider Künstler ist die Reduktion auf wesentliche Symbole und Elemente und das Arbeiten mit grellen Farben, poppigen Kontrasten.
Neben ihrer individuellen künstlerischen Arbeit leiten Marije und Guido TADA projects (Temporary Artspace of Dutch Abstracts). TADA zielt auf die internationale Vernetzung von Künstlern und der Organisation von Ausstellungen für Künstler einer abstrakten Formsprache. TADA steht in der langen Tradition niederländischer Abstraktion und schöpft aus diesem Netzwerk für die Präsentation in temporären Ausstellungen und Projekten weltweit.

Zur Eröffnung begrüßen wir den Künstler Philippe Cavaleri, ein Klangkünstler und Bildender Künstler aus Belgien, der mit Found Footage, Field Recordings und eigenhändig modifizierten Schallplatten (cut up or glue records) arbeitet. Zur Eröffnung von ’no guts no glory‘ spielt Cavaleri auf seinem Material.

Marije Vermeulen (1976 Delft, NL) makes paintings, installations and wallpaintings in which color, energy and brightness are important aspects.
The color combinations, shapes and tightly controlled divisions have their origin in reality, but are distorted and transformed through a comprehensive sketching process. This process includes actions like, measuring, tilting, dividing and moving shapes around.
The sources of origin of the work are remarkably romantic in comparison with the neat end result.
Some examples include swaying palm trees, tropical flowers and beach houses, fashion and fashion magazines, Venetian palazzos and striped mooring poles. These spherical influences can still be found in the titles of the works.
The contrast in the work between strict execution and the extravagance of the sources and colors gives the works both a controlled and dynamic image.
Marije Vermeulen (1976 Delft, NL) studied Painting at the Academy of Arts in Den Bosch after studying Fashion Design in Arnhem. In 2007 she received a grant by the Mondrian Fund, in 2008 she was mentored by artist Jan van der Ploeg and in 2011 she was nominated for the Royal Dutch Award for painting. Marije Vermeulen exhibited her work in galleries and institutions worldwide, including Raid Projects Los Angeles, Soil Gallery Seattle, ParisCONCRET Paris, Supermarket Art Fair Stockholm, RE-Rotterdam, INDEX Melbourne, Kunsthal KAdE Amersfoort and Post-Museum Singapore. Vermeulen is co-initiator of TADAprojects, Temporary Artspace of Dutch Abstracts, an artist run initiative primarily concerned with abstract art.
Guido Nieuwendijk
The work of Guido Nieuwendijk (1967 Auckland, NZ), that consists of wall paintings and small works on panel, is recognizable by its bright colors, geometrical shapes and a thoughtful build-up.
The origin of his work is about converting small everyday thoughts and ideas into art. These simple starting points compared to the precise execution give the work its tension.
Guido Nieuwendijk does intuitive research in the formal aspects of painting in an open and relativistic way, by playing with its boundaries and bending rules. This results in work that fights the idea of logic and sets the viewer on the wrong path.
Guido Nieuwendijk (1967 Auckland, NZ) studied Painting at the School of Arts in Utrecht. He has exhibited his work worldwide in various galleries and institutions including Soil gallery in Seattle, ParisCONCRET in Paris, Het Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort, Post-Museum in Singapore, Kommunale galerie in Berlin, Coda museum in Apeldoorn, LACDA in Los Angeles and PSprojectspace in Amsterdam. His work is part of several collections worldwide.
